No doubt about it, our passion tends to gather a whole lot of insane people of all sorts. We can come to this conclusion without even talking about the self-destructive impulses covered up by the will to perform some kind of nut tricks with high levels of danger. Well first, no one would come up with the idea of organising a blading contest, outside, in the street, in Lyon, on the docks of the Rhône, all this by mid December, when the days are the shortest and there are 3 chances out of 4 that the weather will turn out really bad.

Then you come up with the quite peculiar idea to add some spots, like a removable handrail, meaning some will have to build up such a spot, bringing all the necessary tools and materials (cement machine, arc welding machine, etc…) within total illegality, in outdoor bright daylight while smoking big bats; there, you kinda get the idea now.
Then you go figure, well on D day, why not bring a power generator to get some music pumping, a hot dog machine, a tank of “vin chaud” (hot wine mixture, ed.) and even a few heaters so your wife might decide to come along; and again, all of that under the police’s eye and without any kind of authorisation, there you can guess the whole picture.

Well, no surprise there but it’s December 17th at Foch, and it’s f*ckin freezing. But we shouldn’t complain too much as the sun is shining on the big ledges. When we get there some of the guys are already skating the new flat ledge, we notice the usual train ride we usually get on the first spot of street contests as they get started.
We’re not going to give you a list of the riders and tricks, first because it would take ages and then because for once we have a good excuse: we were busy filming!
So if you want to see some jumps and slides, scroll down the page and check out the edit put together by one of the biggest ledge rubber and go-getter of the history of Foch, Mr Louis Vilar!

The session quickly moved on to the infamous down ledges, but especially to the kink rail mentioned before, who was clearly eyeing everyone. This would inspire Po Rouge, chief organiser of the event, with the only regret of the day being they should have allowed pressure to come up longer by letting people skate the ledges before putting the rail together.
Indeed it didn’t take long go all the way down the rail, quickly with some tech switch ups, then some attempts to transfer from the rail to the down ledge and of course to disaster from the top run up to the second part of the rail, an idea that quite helped our dear McFly to begin his butt skin tearing process.

The most chocking part was to witness the several attempts of what would have been a world first in Foch (according to one of the Lords of this land, Mr Thomas Pfluger) and Lord Arlo would know that this spot has already been fucked up by a good amount of great skaters throughout the years, but the disaster from the run up on top of the stairs to the far right part of the downledge, this had never been done. Clearly nuts, to the point where besides fearing for the physical integrity of Maxim Iangaev, we simply ask ourselves if that trick is physically doable, especially topsouling it!
Max tried it several times, close landing it twice, but the ethical committee couldn’t validate his attempts. However it let most of the spectators in awe, even some young skateboarders, attracted by some blood smell came up to me admitting “f*ck, this is crazy, we didn’t even think people were still blading, but they are doing insane tricks, it looks like snowboarding!” Nothing to add there!

In addition to the passionate public on site, fighting against the cold with big cups of “vin chaud”, or absinthe for our gonzo reporter Jack; a good number of people walking by came up during the session, trying to understand what was going on. Quite a difficult task when there is no order or turn, when most of the spectators are busier laughing and drinking than cheering up for the competitors and when the speaker himself is slurring at the riders and the public before smashing his speaker on the ground. Well, at least we kinda caught their attention. And well, the goal wasn’t to host an event for a wide public…

Little before the night came, and after the last stunts from the future winner Hadrien Bastouil, everyone finally took their skates off and the apéro took its real place. Some took the advantage of the time to go warm up at home for a while before the highlight of the night, the award ceremony and after party in a pub of the infamous Sainte Catherine Street.

What can we say aside from it being total mayhem, that the security was overran although they were three big guys, and that more spliffs and ciggies where smoked outside of the smoke room than inside. The only good thing about that smoke area was to use it as a shelter against the wildlife of the bar.

The party was a big mess, that’s all about it, and we’ll keep the foggy details of alcohol to ourselves but will actually mention the courage of Antonin Roux who spent the whole night only out of ciggies and fruit juice.

There you go, we talked about a lot of things, now time to enjoy the edit from Louis and a few pictures we managed to save.

You don’t wanna be that doorman !
