The scene in Lyon has always been very active in the French blading community with its legendary spots, its charismatic and stylish skaters but mainly thanks to this “je ne sais quoi” characterising the detachment and a certain arrogance among some of them. Today, after a few years of waiting since their last online edit, the predominantly home grown scene from Lyon, led by the Sean’s crew, is coming back with a full length video. With these guys one can only expect a video filled with commitment, punctuated by good rock’n’roll but also a fair bit of bullshits. We had the chance to talk to Clément Barbaza and Victor Legrand just a week before the video release, and fortunately it came in time with the launch of La Roulette.

(rires) …

Etienne: So boys, how is it coming along?
Clément: Well we can say it’s all done. Actually only Jey’s section is missing.
Hadrien: He told me he was just done filming.
C: Yes it’s all good he is uploading it right now through wetransfer, it takes hours and since he doesn’t have internet at home it’s a bit hard. He’s doing it at the bar right now apparently.
H: Ok good thing, because he almost lost everything not long ago.
C: All I know is he was on a spot with his computer today adding the last trick, to not loose any time !

E: So let’s get it started with a little explanation about the Sean’s crew because after all you’ve never done it. A quick overview of course, and then we can talk about the video. So who was in the team at first? You were in from the start Buffle, who was it with?
C: Well Umberto, Fred, Victor, … and my brother Thibault too. Basically that was that, that’s how it started in … 2007 I think. It was when we were in New York with Fred. We were seeing each other and skating together for a while, and as we were trying to make a video we thought about how we should name the thing. At the time we were digging Sean Santamaria’s section in Road To Nowhere, so we thought it should be the Sean Santamaria’s fan club. The Sean’s

E: Et vous l’avez rencontré non ? Vous lui avez raconté l’histoire ?
V: Il est au courant de tout ça oui. Umberto l’a vu plusieurs fois, ils ont travaillé ensemble. Il l’a vu quand il est allé aux Etats Unis.
E: C’est rigolo ça. Donc en fait c’est un fan club à la base ?
V: Ouais un peu ironique quand même.
E: Légèrement ironique ouais ?
C: Non non Road To Nowhere man !!
(rires)

E: And have you met him? Have you told him the story?
V: Yes he knows. Umberto has seen him many times, they worked together. And he saw him when he went to the States.
E: That’s funny. So it actually started as a fan club?
V: Yes kind of a joke.
E: Kind of a joke?
C: No no, Road To Nowhere dude!! The section on the Velvet Underground where he skates Majestics …Victor almost just got fired… not remembering Sean’s section in Road To Nowhere.
(laughs)

C: That’s how it started. After that Fred made the first two videos. (Sean’s & Sean’s II)
V: We wanted to make a third one for while now, it took quite a long time just talking about it actually. And we had no one really motivated to film at first, nor anyone with the appropriate gear. Fred was tired of filming blading so we realised we had to do it ourselves. Clément bought a camera and as I used to own one we started doing it together.
E: Very well. And it has been a while with Fred… I ran into him in Paris, but have you seen him again?
C: I saw him in Paris too the last time I went up there. Actually we asked him if he wanted to edit this one but he said “no I would delete half of the rush because I wouldn’t like the way it’s filmed”. I can agree with that though. So we thought we would figure it out ourselves.
V: And that’s what we did.

E: Good point. And how long have you been working on it and how long since the tricks have been filmed? I hope all the tricks are not four years old, are they?
C: No, for most of them it’s been a year, not more.
V: Thibault’s section is a year and a half old, two years maybe. And the rest was done lately; it was during the past year we did most of the filming.
C: We filmed it all since last summer basically.

E: And what kind of camera did you use? Do you have a DSLR camera or a camcorder?
C: We have two Canons, a 550D and a 600D, with different lenses like a fisheye, a wide lens and a 50mm.
E: Ok, and for Jérémy, you used a Canon too?
H: Yes a lot of clips with a 650D as well with the same lenses. But he got one too.

V: Yes Jey bought a camera too but it was stolen at Roskilde.

C: So yeah that’s it, you filmed most of it.
H: Yes but Radi too, actually she finished the filming with her iPhone.
C: Yes she did some filming. And in the end Jey did everything on his own. He did his section by himself from A to Z. We didn’t step in at any time; he did the editing too. I haven’t even seen it yet. We agreed on the rest together. We did the sections we wanted on our own, then watched them together and changed what was wrong. Us two and Romain Zimmerman.
V: Zimmerman did the colour correction too. We got a few clips from the homies too, Mathias, Jon and all those who live a bit far and we couldn’t film ourselves. Rémy as well and a few others and now there is a lot of guys in the friends’ section.

E: That’s great, you got motivated to do something thorough regarding the picture and that gathered everyone in. So what section will be in it?
C: Well there is Thibault, Umberto, Victor, Jey and there is a big friends’ section and a quite long intro too.
V: The video is about 35-40 minutes long.
C: The friends’ section alone is 10 minutes long.
V: Yes there is a lot of stuff. The friends’ section is really complete. There is a lot of tricks, lots of places, lots of people. Clips from London, Nice, Paris, Marseille, and Lyon of course.
C: There is also footage from our tour in the US from last year.
V: And Strasbourg with Mathias and Jon. The guys from Brussels, Rémy, Moss, Mathieu hennebert.
C: The guys in Paris too Louis and Stelhé… And also Dubost…

E: Oh merde !!

E: Oh shit!! Alright so about forty minutes long that’s cool. And did you manage to get something fairly consistent? Concerning the skating, footage, music?
C & V: Well…. The music yeah totally.
V: We got pretty regular stuff with the same tones, a homogenous lighting throughout the whole video. And Umberto did the whole typo in the last video, with every titles etc so we tried to keep the ideas from the first videos. We kept the same effects and everything, keeping bright colours on the titles.
C: We tried to keep the same direction as before, but it’s a bit tough to judge by ourselves. We know it by heart by now; we watched it so many times. We know what’s in it and we are just really happy with how it all comes together.

E: And how long did the editing take?
C: Six months, because we kept on filming stuff while editing had begun, so it kept on evolving. I know I did some changes in the sections just a couple of days ago.

(rires)
E: Enfin à part toi, Vic.
V: Grave man !
(rires)

E: To finish up can you tell us what you originally wanted to do with this video? It’s a buddies video done for fun?
C Yes it’s also a way to show what we dig in blading. It’s us, our homies, the tricks our homies like doing.
V What we like in blading in fact.
C In some ways it is quite critical of what is happening around us because we show what we do like.
E: The goal wasn’t to do something like “yeah look at us, look how good we are”.
C: Not at all because anyway we’re not … well you know.
(laughs)
E: Well except for you Vic.
V: Yeah man!
(laughs)
C: We had that in mind for a while, we only worked on something bigger than usual, with more people too.
V: Something different from what we usually see, a real video.
C: And as we were discussing earlier nothing really comes up to mind regarding French videos, so we have to talk about it. And at least we were digging doing something complete all together.

H: That’s why we’re still blading.
C: Yeah still
V: Oh and there’s no skatepark in our video.
C: There is a couple of clips actually, in a street park.
E: Well we can accept that.
C: Even Jimmy is in the streets, that’s not easy.
E: Well I can’t wait to see that.
V: Even Julien Cudot.
E: Well that’s an interesting tease!!!
