Interview Julien Cudot

We all know that, whether he’s on skates or a drink in his hand, Julien (la Cudz) is capable of everything. The best and the worst. After the injuries and sharing a flat in Lyon with the fantastic Jimmy Dubost (la Dubz), we thought he was out of business, lost for skating, corroded by booze.

THE WORST.

Thus, we wanted to do an interview labeled “How to screw up your skating career with Julien Cudot” but this crook took us by surprise by releasing one of the most ballsy part we’ve seen this year. We finally decided, reluctantly for some of La Roulette editors, to cut it straight to the release of his pro skate from Trigger Skate along with its promotional edit.

THE BEST.

The man tries to be a professional, so do we. In order to discuss all of that with him, we sat down in a French restaurant in the city of Paris that witnessed his birth, where, as a good frenchy, after Picon beer for appetizers, he went for a tartar.

Ok Julien, so Trigger Skate, tell us about it, a friend of yours is behind that right ?

Yep, it’s actually one of my best friends for almost 10 years now who started that, Xavier.

So, it’s a French brand, managed from France, but where are the skates made ?

In China, in the Shenzen area, where apparently a lot of skate brands are produced. Actually I really tripped out when I saw the videos, but a lot of things on the skates are handmade, which is quite logical really since the scale of production is small there’s no point in creating actual production lines.

Let’s go back a little, no regrets regarding your older sponsors now you decided to jump on board with this new adventure ?

Well I’d been skating for USD for 8 years, but yes no regrets. Because even if I’ve not always been really professional with them, it didn’t seem like they wanted to promote a lot more of me. Aside from that it hasn’t been really easy with Xavier at first either, because he was only talking about it when we were hanging out drinking in his flat at Bastille, and I would always answer ‘yeah I’m in’ without seriously projecting myself. And there we are 3 years later : at the point where my name had to come on the first skates. At this moment it wasn’t easy because I didn’t really know where I was with my skating career, what I was worth in this industry, and it might have created a few tensions at the start.

Right, and with USD there had been rumours of a pro skate at some point too ?

That’s true, so I was asking myself if I shouldn’t try to be more professional with USD, which is already an established brand in blading, but we weren’t getting along so much. So I thought that things might be better done on my own, and that’s the opportunity I had with Trigger.

On the other hand it’s never easy to start something like this with people who really are good friends first.

Clearly, moreover Xavier was always talking about it at the start of drunken nights, and well with me, if you want to be serious about it you’d better call me during the day, whereas with Xavier, if you say yes at the party, it’s a done deal. I can’t be mad at him for that because that’s just the way he is, but we had to come to an agreement. And even now it’s sometimes after 2 hours of chatting together that we realise we are actually working. I gotta say that we are both so passionate that it’s hard for us to really think about it as a job. But it’s slowly coming together.

Attends… Neou Men, époque Salomon?

In the end, your name is on a pair of skates ! Ok, trivia question, do you know which other(s) French skater(s) had this privilege?

Lol, yesterday someone tricked me into thinking I was the first one, thanks ! I know Silhan had one, but I gotta admit it’s the only name that pops out… Wait…Neou Men, back with Salomon?

Well done, but not with Salomon, on an old pair of Grycon’s he probably barely touched.

There we go, got third, that’s a podium lol

And that skate with your name on it, you happy about it? Actually black on black, you couldn’t go wrong…

At first we thought about a grey skate, the one you can see in the edit, but it evolved after a few drunken talks, and when we finally received the grey skate I didn’t really like it, which made me question myself again. But when we went together to China last year they showed us one of the prototypes they had made themselves, which was all black, and actually suited me a lot more to put my name on. Luckily it was still time to switch to that colour scheme. After the prototypes, Xavier gave me the final version right before I flew to Asia where I was supposed to film for the edit. The funny thing is that the very first trick I did with the final version of the skate is the drop backflip you see in the video.

Constipé ? / Constipated ?

Well yeah, basic warm up trick!

Well we were in China right, for the FISE in Chengdu, and Joe Atkinson and Alfano come to me with a picture of a spot, and Alfano actually says handing the camera “Fuck man, you’re gonna want to backflip that shit !” The only thing was that I did all the demos with USDs, I thought it looked doable but I had to do it with Triggers, the ones I hadn’t even tried yet ! I only went around twice in the park before checking in to the spot, and vamos ! Well at that point I knew the skates were more or less holding it lol.

Yeah, there’s no fisheye clip, but seems damn far !

Actually I went too far, I wonder now if I wouldn’t have landed it first try going slower, but I needed time to spin too and I clearly didn’t want to land head flat ! I also considered wearing a helmet but the only one I had was a crappy one I got from Johan for the event, so I thought I’d better get the fuck out before they find a better one, then I have no choice !

And now, after wearing them for a longer time, what do you think of the skate ?

Well it’s actually quite true what people say, it looks like a mix of different existing skates.

In the meantime it’s quite hard to come out with something truly new, we see now that after trying the step in shoes, it’s going back to one block hard boots.

Yeah, but what I meant was that it’s hard to combine the goods of different skates. With Triggers, I feel like there’s older Remz comfort but with a tongue that doesn’t twist. The skates are light, maybe just a tiny bit heavier than USD Carbon Frees, can hardly tell. That’s it, the skate is comfortable, reactive, manoeuvrable, so I’m happy with it !

Alright, let’s get to the edit, even if we already mentioned it. What I first liked was the music ! I showed it to my flatmate yesterday and he went like “Fuck yeah, he’s got that tune !” We clearly don’t discover anything new but hearing this, I think well, there’s a sort of detachment, like people will think what they want, I dig that tune, I use it. And I see that in your skating too, you do your tricks, your way, not bothering too much about what we could call the trend.

I think that’s what’s cool in blading, anyone can do it his own way, as he feels. And yes, for a video edit, I won’t film tricks I can’t do or can’t do well. You have to compose something with your own skating. But to be honest, there’s some tricks I wouldn’t have put into, but still did to go till the end of the song, because I hurt my ribs after 10 days of filming. However,  I’m quite pessimistic about people’s judgement on my skating, especially on the Internet, but now I’m a bit used to deal with it.

Yes, you were already talking about it in the only real interview I could find from you, it was for the WRS uploaded comp, when you were opposed to Sizemore, people went hard on this confrontation.

Yeah I got straight against him, it was a tuff start for the contest, and comments were harsh.

Which was funny as Sizemore clearly used to skate the way you do, but he evolved in a way corresponding to the vision of, let’s say, the “big heads” of skating see it.

Oh yeah, he really was into the spin-grind to win thing, but he was also going mad in the streets. However, today he can do everything and perfectly. I feel like he’s one of the only who can reach Broskow’s level of control. However, he used to dress a lot worse than I did.

Haha no doubt about this ! Fine for skating, but I also wanted to have your word about the song you picked.

Well regarding the music, on one hand I had some friends saying ‘ok it’s your section I don’t really like it but you do what you want’ but on the other hand I wasn’t too worried. We actually worked on it, we wanted to add some fun stuff around the tricks, we wanted a cool vibe to it with monkeys and all that, well ‘the explorer’*! Anyway, I wanted to use this tune for a long time, it’s a song my parents were blasting at home when I was a kid.
*(ndlr: in the song ‘L’aventurier’ means ‘the explorer’)

Personally I find it really well done!

Well, that’s cool, but I also think that, aside from the blade fans, it would be awesome to be able to reach a wider public, a public interested in extreme sports, like us for instance as we can watch ski or BMX videos.

We agree on that too. So how did the filming go? You told us you got hurt pretty soon into it right ?

Yes and that’s also why I questioned using ‘L’aventurier’ because I really wanted to save it for my biggest section.

Yes there’s not doubt you can skate a lot harder!!

Yeah I wanted to throw myself on drop kinks,  to go all-in, but I fucked myself up after only 10 days so I couldn’t finish filming all I wanted in Australia. Fortunately, as we had prototypes for two years already, I had a few clips filmed in Paris, but also in China and Malaysia from last year.

Yeah, and the skates had to come out no matter what.

Honestly Xavier told me I could wait for my ribs to get better and even that the edit could wait for after the Winterclash so I could add 4 or 5 hammers. It was doable but I announced a release date and I wanted to respect it.

And it was good that the people saw it before the Clash, to get the thing started before the big event.

Yes exactly, it was time to drop it, plus Adrien did a good job on the editing and I’m quite happy about it. In the end we had really good feedback, people liked it, and I know we can even do better next time.

Yes it’s always a though job to make an edit for the release of a promodel, you don’t have much time between the reception of the first samples and the commercial release. So if you add wintertime in Paris and its awful weather, and the few camera men available, it doesn’t help.

Clearly, moreover skating street isn’t so natural to me, I didn’t start with that at all. It’s not like skating parks where even after an 8 months break, I can still throw double backs straight up. I remember when I started skating rails, I used to jump using my hand, a weird technique, and people used to think ‘fuck what is he doing ?’. So even now I need time to build my confidence back. And as I knew Melbourne has lots of perfect spots and it was summer there it was the perfect place to get back at it and film right away.

It’s true you’ve been injured a lot lately !

Well yeah it took me a year to come back from my ankle I hurt Annecy, then I broke my wrist again last year, but I gotta say I often sought for it ! In Annecy I didn’t even have a big one the night before, and maybe because I didn’t pass out I slept only 2 hours and felt febrile all day. I was good enough to skate but not to go loco.

Ok, and now the edit’s out, what’s next for you?

Winterclash clearly, the momentum is good, the edit made its effect so far and people are going to see others with the skates, so we hope it’s going to be a good launch for the brand !

And I feel like you’re not going there to sell waffles too !

Well definitely not, I’m going for the win. Actually I may have talked too much in Australia, saying there was only Aragon and I who won it twice and thus I could be the only one to win it three times, obviously I fucked up my ribs right after.

True ! You took the win in Berlin too. Fuck that was a good comp, we were looking good cheering like football fans in the arena !

Funny today I stumbled upon the picture on Facebook ‘6 years ago’ where I’m standing fucked up with my team France uniform, looking so good ! I remember people holding me at the end of the comp, then they said the results would come in 15 minutes so I went straight to the bar where I ordered 3 pints that I literally emptied in 2 seconds, and that’s how I ended up on the podium.

We kind of forget it, but that actually was a first try 540 alley oop top soul

Vendu ! Merci les gars !

And the first win, battling against Aragon, it was what, 2 or 3 years before ?

Yeah, in 2007, I just turned ASA pro, but if you rewatch the thing now, Aragon clearly should have won with his 540 tts and 540 true top acid. Don’t know, they must have liked the dwarf also doing 540 to grinds with his helmet on lol !

Well maybe but in Berlin there was clearly no debate !

Another funny one is that I won in 2010, then in 2011 they decided only those sponsored by a boot company could compete in pros, so they put me back with the ams, and a year after I won pro again in Eindhoven. Big achievement !

All right thanks Julien we’re gonna stop here or it will be too much work for us lol. Dinner is on me, you pay the digestive?

Fair enough ! Thank you guys !
