First thing for those of you who do not speak French, you have to understand that Complo comes from the word ‘complot’, meaning ‘conspiracy’. It is a concept, a series of theories becoming more than isolated phenomenon. There are actually several different ways of looking at it but a sure thing is that those who are in power and have control over the world are hiding several aspects of why and how. Whatever you may think, it’s also clear they do not work hand in hand for the greater good. Some may appear in broad daylight but a lot of them live hiding, in disguise. The following interview will not give you any answer in regard to those pulling the strings nor hand you the keys to understanding today’s world politics but might at least shake your curiosity about historical themes we tend to forget. The artworks from Complo, a French clothing brand from our good friend Lucas Spenle, digs into artistic and mythological inspirations of our history. Will you be able to get the true conclusions of the state of things?

——-

Let’s get right into this with the first question, why making yet another clothing brand in the blading world?

Lucas: Well our aim is not only to do something within blading as a lot has already been done and we do not claim to change anything in blading with Complo. What we stand for would be trying to bring something more personal, like our own identity, that would differ from what we usually see today, and trying to introduce something about blading in different spheres such as urbex, graffiti and sculpture.

LR: Alright, thanks for that first answer, it was just a starter! Now onto something more general, can you briefly introduce yourself?

Lucas: I come from Thonon les Bains, it’s a small town right opposite from Lausanne where I started skating some years ago, god knows how. Then I moved to Lyon to complete my studies and finally ended up moving to Bordeaux with the idea to start surfing more; in the end I did not surf much but rather skated a lot more. I did a lot of different stuff during my studies as well as different sorts of odd jobs until I decided I needed a real job and started training as a stonecutter with the ‘Compagnons du devoir’. So that’s what I’ve been really doing in the past few years until I finally started my own company in cultural heritage restauration.

LR: So it’s safe to say you’ve got experience in various domains and creating a clothing brand adds something to it?

Lucas: Yeah, well it started more as something fun to do as we never intended to make money with this project, it’s more something like offering a different identity. For now, it seems like people are digging it which is cool. If it ever becomes profitable we’ll be more than happy but I doubt it.

LR : Indeed, it’s only skating, not a big market. Anyway looks like it’s going well for now as you’re about to come up with a second collection. But let’s get back to the early days of the brand. Why Complo? Is it really a coincidence?

Lucas: Aaaah!! Well no it isn’t! I’ve always been a good friend of a fellow named Pierre (Amir Roti) whom I working on the project with. We were in the same high school and started blading together. Actually in high school we already started something and were selling some t-shirts under the hood which was quite funny. Then for a few years we did things on our own but still kept contact once in a while. During that time, he developed quite some impressive skills in drawing, graffiti, tattooing and sculpting, so as the idea of the brand grew in my head I naturally asked him if he wanted in, especially that he too works in cutting stones. Such an association brought complementary ideas on the table but still with a different point of view that would have a positive influence on a brand. So we cooked everything up for almost a year, talking for hours over the phone, imagining stuff and speculating on what we could do with a brand. We did not even have the name Complo but after hours of discussions we realised we had been conspiring on many things, so the name kinda called for itself. It was also at the time bullshit theories about conspiracies became more attractive on the Internet so we played the game. It’s not something we really believe in… or do we?

The Original Complo

(Rires)

LR: True!! But do we really have a choice in believing it or not, or is it there all around us already? That’s another debate.. (Laughs)
But regarding the brand itself, you are at the heart of it along with Amir, are there any other people pulling the strings?

Lucas: Yes, my younger brother Nelson. Amir and I came up with it but my brother joined us quite naturally later on. First because he has always been with us, but he is also quite helpful when it comes to make a point or settle on something quite tricky. Those who have met him know how sharp he can be.
(Laughs)

LR: The artworks are really quite singular and eye catching. The artist behind them is Amir, is he in charge of doing all the drawings and pieces?

Lucas: Yes, exactly! To be honest he does not create everything in the designs as some of the drawings are composed of already existing drawings or paintings. Some drawings are inspired from carvings and engravings he overlapped or slightly modified; some others are complete products of his imagination. Some of the carvings he used date from the Middle Age and are filled with meanings, however everyone is free to interpret the artworks on his own. But it is true that we have studied each of the artwork so it would make sense, well for us at least. In the end it comes out pretty good on material and I hope it tickles everyone’s own interest; more than other logos that are more simple, or let’s say less elaborate.

LR: It is true that it has that artistic dimension more than some other brands have, and when one says artistic means eye-catching and calling out for thinking. So in the end you offer something but it’s each and everyone’s call to see and understand what he wants?

Lucas: Exactly! Sometimes some people even point something out that Amir or I did not even see and that’s really cool as it shows people are questioning themselves about the graphics. I think that’s important, especially for younger generations, those between 16 and 20 years old are quite into it, which is rad.

LR: That’s cool, they can be touched by some themes they are not usually acquainted with such as mythology, the Middle Age, …

Lucas: Yup, when they are compelled by an Archangel, Pierrot and the Harlequin standing in front of a skull, all contemplating the stars above, that’s something different from the latest video from Bieber. But don’t get me wrong, we’re not sitting all night in the dark trying to come up with conspiracy theories!! But as we both have a professional background in stone restoration, Amir also being a sculptor artist, we had to bring in this kind of thematics that quite define us; that’s how it came into the designs we have.

Tote bags

LR: Great! So is the next collection based on the same engraving and mythological spirits?

Lucas: Yes of course! We have been working on new artworks including a new hooded sweater with a design named “AMOR” that will complete the first collection’s “PAX” artwork (ed: Pax / Amor as the motto Peace and Love). We will also have our key logo on a regular sweater with no hoody, as my brother suggested and insisted on, with a tighter fit; and another t-shirt with Complo written in our regular font. We also made some different goodies such as tote bags, quite handy to carry skates or groceries. They will come out in white and blue with the “PAX” artwork on it. We also thought of girls with tank tops, with a design more fit to girls. And if it is still doable, depending on sales, we would like to make beanies and long sleeve t-shirts for winter.

LR: That’s cool you’re trying to widen the flavours! Let’s change the topic a little bit and talk about the team supporting the brand. You came strong with a crew of highly motivated young gunz, which is rad as that’s the future; but who’s really in the team?

Lucas: Well that’s funny as I still ask myself the same question now, who’s really on the team…? But anyway we have our two main quality conspirators who have been following and supporting the brand since day one: Roméo Stocchi from Bordeaux and Franck Steve from Nantes. The two are quite young recruits because Steve is just 18 and Roméo, who officially is 20, does not really age as he lives outside of time. Around them came to support Victor Daum, who needs no introduction and just won the 2 Ratz Cup street comp in Nantes; and more recently we picked up young Armelle from Marseille who is only 14 and already shreds the streets. We met her in Bordeaux during the comp that got cancelled and she came up as a big surprise as she destroyed the long kink rail doing endless and still backtorks! We really wanted to promote younger skaters so it was obvious we needed a girl too; also because more and more girls are killing it. We also have Stan Kogutyak in Paris who really digs the brand and was there to help us a few times; moreover, the fact that he comes from Ukraine really bonded with Amir who has a special connexion to the country. There is also Giles Buelens in Belgium from the Bloempot Crew, we met him in Bilbao and hooked him up. So yeah our goal is to focus on the new generations more than others, even if some older guys are really good and cool with us, we’d rather privilege the future. Especially that their motivation is unlimited, for them right now it’s all about skating, skating and skating!!! So aside from that we do not really know how it is going to evolve as I also mentioned we did not want to only stick to blading but also would like to open to surfing, skateboarding, urbex and other areas. We already have a good buddy here in Bordeaux who skateboards and dig the brand. We’ll have to wait and see what’s coming for us.

Franck Steve – Gap over the ledge to Fish – Maxime Hillairaud

LR: So you’re not only looking at blading but also want to include urban and artistic areas.

Lucas: Correct! Good thing for us is that Amir is getting more and more recognition within the artistic scene, in graffiti and tattooing too, which gives us a way in. People are interested, we even sold some clothes to people outside of blading. I really think he’s got amazing skills and people talk about his paintings and sculptures, whether it is in Ukraine, or in Paris with his sculpture ‘Orpheo’ he spent 4 years on completing. So in the end, between our first project which was to create a brand with friends for fun, and the reality of what it is now we have to spend quite some time rethinking what’s our next move. But to answer your question, urban sports and street art, not only blading.

LR: It’s true that the times when every rider would wear blading brands was a better time for blading clothing brands, and you wouldn’t have had to think too much about it; but we noticed you already have quite a good exposure in France. We see quite a lot of people wearing your shirts in events, being part of the “team” or not, but do you know if people are getting into it outside of France?

Lucas: Yes, I’ve already sent some stuff to Belgium. More recently we went to Athens where we brought some clothes to shoot some pictures and everyone at the Blade House seemed to dig it. It was the same when I went to Spain, so let’s see what the future holds once we are happy with the fundamentals of the brand with a solid Instagram and maybe a proper website. Once we get there and get started with the next collections we will have a little more time to see what can be done abroad, maybe through blading shops or others selling street wear. But all of that is quite a lot of work, almost like a full time job, so with that on the side of our real activities we have to be sure that the time and energy we invest will pay off.

LR: A more technical question now, where are the products made? Clothing, printing, etc?

Lucas: Everything is made in Bordeaux. At first I could have gone with some big company which would have been a little bit cheaper but I chose to go for local. So we work with two brothers who are craftsmen and screen printers, they have been working in their workshop in the heart of Bordeaux for more than 25 years. Their printings are top notch and don’t wear off, people who bought our clothes can attest. Those two guys seemed like the right option, a lot more than a big spiritless company where we would only have been some other boxes in the production line, only reachable through emails. With those guys we can actually talk and express ourselves, we created a discussion and more importantly they liked our spirit and everything goes well every time we drop by. If maybe one day we need to produce thousands of products we might change but as for now this is perfect for us. Our t-shirts are made from organic cotton, sweaters aren’t though, not too sure where they come from actually.
We are also thinking of making large paper and poster prints for the future, which would maybe allow us to reach into street art more easily. In my opinion some of the artwork are really worth looking on a larger scale and hung on walls. These are ideas but that’s where we hope to go to, again depending on money and time we can devote.

Complo ‘AMOR’

LR: You came up straight with a team video as you officially launched the first collection, the question is ‘is there going to be a volume 2’? Maybe with the next collection?

Lucas: I’d love to! But pretty much just like the rest of our projects we will hold on and see how things go. I really question the format too as I don’t really want to make another classic video again with profiles like Primum Insidias, but more something like a tour abroad with some of the guys from the team. A little bit like what we just did in Greece with Gaston but with more people and maybe someone chosen for filming so we can shoot something a little bit different from what we usually see. We will also focus on Instaclips as it is a lot more convenient to go out and film with your phone than carrying all your shooting gear all the time. I feel like sometimes we feel like we have to do some clips instead of just having fun and slide all together.

LR: It quite fits our time too when people don’t really take the time to sit and watch a full length video, there’s a lot more visibility with shorter one minute edits you can watch on your phone… Before we end this let’s broaden up a little bit, you are one of the guys behind Shred Da Ground, which at first helped and carried Complo a little bit, what’s to expect for the future of that street comp series?

Lucas: Well we’ve had some ups and downs with Shred Da Ground, but finally ended up having a 4th edition with Stan (Kogutyak) and Tom (Thieuleux) which was great. So we should come up with a 5th contest sometime next year; nothing too sure though, except it will not be in France. We have quite a few ideas for cities but we have a little bit of time so it should do. We would love to make something bigger, get more sponsors and therefore more money so we can get more people to come and the event could be huge. We have had great feedback so we’re quite hyped for something big. And everything is smooth and easy with Stan and Tom!

LR: Awesome! I think we quite covered everything we wanted to ask you bro, so to wrap it up, maybe you have a date for the release of the next collection?

Lucas: There is no specific date but there are a couple of events coming up like the Ratz Cup in Nantes and the Shlague Session in Lyon, so I will bring some stuff there to start with and see how people like the new models. After that we will officially start selling through our Instagram account or on our Facebook page (LINK) through PayPal, all that after October 1st.

LR : Super, beau programme !

(Rires)

LR: Great news! Do you have anything to add, anything we forgot to ask?

Lucas: No, I think we got quite a lot out of the way, thanks to La Roulette for doing this; thanks to Amir and my brother for helping me with Complo.

LR: No thank you, we do what we can!

(Laughs)
